Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How many Lessons will I need?

A. This is a very difficult question to answer. The DSA reccommend 47 hours of professional lessons combined with 20 hours of private practice (click here for more info). Everyone learns the skills at different rates so it is impossible to estimate this figure.

Q. Do I need to pass the Theory Test before I can learn to drive?

A. No, as long as you have received your Provisional Licence you can start lessons straight away.

Q. How old do I have to be before I can drive?

A. You can drive on your 17th birthday with the relevant provisional licence - if you are disabled you maybe entitled to drive when your 16.

Q. When do I apply for my provisional licence?

A. You can apply for your provisional licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday.

Q. When is the earliest I can take my theory Test?

A. On your 17th birthday.

Q. Do I have to pass both parts of the theory test at the same time?

A. Yes, the theory test is made up of 50 multiple choice questions & the Hazard Perception test. If you pass only 1 of the 2 sections then the whole test is recorded as a fail and you have to retake and pass both parts the next time.

Q. Can I book my Driving Test as soon as I'm 17?

A. The Driving Test can only be booked after you have passed the theory test.

Q. How long are your lessons?

A. Each lesson is 60 minutes; our normal lessons are 60mins, 90mins or 120mins.

Q. Where will I be picked up & dropped off?

A. Where ever is most convenient for you - home, college, work etc.

Q. My friend was made to pick up his instructors next pupil during his lesson.

A. We never piggy-back pupils - all lessons are 1 to 1 - unless you want a friend or parent to accompany you - that's fine.

Q. What do I need to bring with me on my first lesson?

A. You need to bring both parts of your provisional licence. (Photo card and paper counterpart). If you need glasses for distance vision then bring those. You also need to bring payment. Mini Drive instructors take many forms of payment click here for more information on payment options.

Q. I am really nervous. Will i be asked to drive straight away?

A. Generally you won't be asked to drive straight away as we need to assess your ability first. This will be done in a quiet area with no, or very little traffic. All lessons are structured to match your ability and the appropriate amount of instruction will be given.

Q. My friends instructor shouts at her when she gets things wrong.

A. We pride ourselves on our friendly and constructive approach and all our instructors follow a voluntary code of practice set out by the DSA. If you feel intimidated by your instructor in any way please feel free to report this to us immediately so that we can investigate and resolve the issue.
